Children have an innate ability to see beyond surface reality. Many naturally sense the presence of Spirits, for example. With this in mind children can use divination systems to provide them with increased options and perspectives while growing up. While some people might hesitate to teach children such things, our Children's spiritual natures need to be acknowledged and encouraged. They are after all, our future.

Generally, children around the age of ten comprehend what they're looking at in simple divination systems. Stone or rune sets, in particular. They seem to attract interest and attentiveness. Because a child can play with these without fear of damage, they can easily transfer the energy of a question into the stones. The archetypes of the runes may still prove a little complex for this age group, so I would suggest using stone with simple, hand-painted emblems or a collection of various crystals instead. In either case the child should determine ahead of time what each stone would mean when they pull or cast it.

Have the child consider the stone's color, shape, where it was found, or how it feels to them to determine the associations. If this process proves to difficult, a pre made set of stones called the" Sacred Stone Oracle" comes with a casting cloth, pouch, interpretive Pamphlet, and a reasonable price tag. It is available through Blue Pearl (1-800-822-4810) an alternative type of divination that works for visually inspired children is that of reading shadows patterns.

For example: When sunlight filters through the trees, it creates a pattern on the ground, on the house, on a wall. Children can think of a question and then "hunt" for the images in the shadows for the answers.

WARNING:  This is not a good exercise for children who are afraid of the dark as it may increase the instances of seeing scary images. However I have found this to be a very productive exercise.
